Parents have always taught their kids to always tell the truth and to never hide secrets from them, but what no kid has ever done is question their own parents. Parents are the ones who are usually hiding the most shocking and disquieting secrets that no kid could ever imagine. And this secret was the one that changed both Yaharia and Camilo’s lives. This secret told by their dad is something that they will never forget and it is definitely an example on how parents can have a big impact on a kid’s life. Yahaira is a very talented and smart young woman who grew up in New York in a very luxurious life with both her mother and father. Camino is also a very talented girl who grew up in the Dominican Republic, but unlike Yahaira, Camino was mainly raised by her aunt and her father in a poor part of town. The main conflict starts when both girls lose their father when he was going to the Dominican Republic to visit family members which throws both girls into a deep depression and it challenges them to bear with the grief of losing a loved one. The novel was told in such a way that was clear to understand the story, and it wasn’t confusing at all to keep up with what was going on. At first, it might be a little bit difficult to understand what is going on in the story because the novel just jumps into conflict right away but as the story progresses, it is much easier to understand. Aside from that, Elizabeth Acevedo was interviewed by The New York Times where they ask her if people read like they eat which she agrees with. What they are pretty much saying is that if people are used to looking at different sorts of books which are connected to how people intend to try different types of foods. This can be seen in Elizabeth’s novel since it shows how both of the sisters wanted to experience something new which is what Elizabeth talks about during the interview. I completely agree with Elizabeth’s claims since I believe that people in life intend to try new things like reading a different type of book much different from the ones you normally read. Elizabeth introduces the relationship between Yahaira and Dre, a lesbian relationship. I believe that Elizabeth is trying to contribute to the LGBTQ+ community by normalizing the relationship between these two girls, pretty much wanting to bring awareness about lesbian relationships. Also, the author includes how both Yahaira and Camino were sexually assaulted by creepy men at different
