In James Joyce’s “Araby” the level of diction is generally formal and complex. The narrator’s diction is very formal, while the other characters in the story have informal diction. In “Araby” Joyce used words like blind, darkness, vanity, anguish and anger in order to express his tone and mood throughout the story.
