Interests in math and science. Mr Hyde had developed a potion that allowed him to turn into Dr. Jekyll. Jekyll found a way to separate his good side from his darker side, by transforming himself into a monster free of consciences. But he later found that he was turning into more and more into Mr Hyde. He started turning into Mr. Hyde in random places, the transformations got worse and worse.
Dr. Jekyll should be held responsible for the crimes of Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll made the decision to separate out the two sides of himself, the moral self from the pleasure-seeking, reckless self. Dr. Jekyll’s experiment led to the development of two personalities fighting within him.
“We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.” This quote by J.K Rowling captures the idea that one man is truly two, through the light and dark of it, but who they truly are depends on which side of the spectrum they act upon. Dr. Jekyll in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Stevenson, cannot decide which concept to be, so he constantly goes between the two, displaying lies and deceit throughout the story by being the two beings at once.
Jekyll is seen performing scientific practice, attempting to achieve a goal which can be argued to exceed his mental capacity. Dr. Jekyll wished to remove his dark side, tampering with the duality of man. He expressed hatred towards is his darker side. It shows this in the quote “many a man would have even blazoned such irregularities as i was guilty of;... I regarded and hid them with an almost morbid sense of shame.”

Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” because the story takes place in Victorian England we see that the characters have no room for expression of emotions or violence. Everything they do is secret, so the more Dr Jekyll is repressed, the more he wants to be Mr Hyde. The original characteristics of Henry Jekyll are reflected as “...life of effort, virtue, and control” (pg. 172) because, most of his life his vice activities were maintained a secret. But this was not his meditations about. Something weird has happened to him about a week ago, and it has been disturbing his mind. Maybe he just wasn’t born to live a life without mystery. “Why to Jekyll?” was the continuous and unanswerable question in his head. After all, Jekyll was his friend, a real friend, and accepting his terrible and uncertain end has been something more complicated than what he thought, and more when what he had bury was a monster called Hyde.
Dr. Jekyll is viewed as a smart man with a lot of knowledge, however, due to Jekyll not being satisfied with his life, he is determined to get more out of his live and is willing to do anything to fulfill his determination. Dr. Jekyll expresses this when he states, “[A] grinding in the bones, deadly nausea, and a horror of the spirit that cannot be exceeded at the hour of birth or death. Then these agonies began swiftly to subside… [t]here was something strange in my sensations, something indescribably new and, from its very novelty, incredibly sweet. I felt younger, lighter, happier in body within I was conscious of a heady recklessness, a current of disordered sensual images running like a millrace in my fancy, a solution of the bonds of obligation, an unknown but not an innocent freedom of the soul.” (Stevenson 57).
Dr. Jekyll is seemingly good, kind, and benevolent; while is not purely good he is a moral gentleman. He started his experiment so he could totally separate the bad and the good in himself into two separate beings. He did not succeed, however, for Dr. Jekyll is plagued by the feeling that he wants to become evil again, thus he wants to become Mr. Hyde. It is important to note that Mr. Hyde is completely evil; he has no goodness in him, in contrast to Dr. Jekyll who was a troubled mix. Mr. Hyde feels no remorse for any evil he has done and actually feels elated when he does commit a moral sin.
The setting of a story can be useful in placing and describing the location of the plot to not only keep the story grounded, but to also give details to the characters and their personalities. The story “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” written by Robert Louis Stevenson, uses the settings and locations to help describe and represent the opposing personalities of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in the larger narrative. Using a dark and eerie setting while showcasing a character like Hyde helps bring out the mysterious character traits that he portrays, whereas using a setting that is more defined in a lighthearted place to help bring out Jekyll’s character encourages the contrast between the two characters. When the character Mr. Hyde is first introduced through another character named Mr. Enfield, Enfield describes the setting of the meeting to be eerie and dark, “about three o’ clock of a black winter morning, and my way lay through a part of town where there was literally nothing to be seen but lamps” (Stevenson, pg.6). As this is the reader’s first introduction to the character, the setting of the location reflects that Mr. Hyde may be a more mysterious character.
“What, after all, am I? Am I an American or am I a Negro? Can I be both? Or is it my duty to cease to be a Negro as soon as possible and be an American?” W.E.B. Du Bois wrote this at the end of the 19th century, a time when a certain race was experiencing the worst conditions in America.
Firstly Stevenson presents Mr Hyde as a Frightening outsider through the portrayal of an impulsive unevolved person. This creates a sense of a frightening outsider as Hyde’s attitude was unfit for his society. Hyde is often described through animalistic imagery to emphasise how he is unfit in the society and how unevolved he is and to create the image of a troglodyte a word by which he is described in in the Carew murder case.
One of the major ideas presented in Jekyll and Hyde is the need for both good and evil to live in coexistence within an individual’s conscience. Jekyll’s experiments prove that a balance between the two sides of nature is crucial to be content in the world.
