Fitzgerald conveys the theme of the book with symbols such as the green light, the Valley of ashes, and the colors yellow and gold. The green light represents the hopes and dreams of Gatsby and how it is his destination to reach it, but he never reaches it because of how corrupted the American Dream is and in which makes the dream unattainable. At the end of chapter one Nick says: “He stretched out his arms towards the dark water in a curious way.”(Fitzgerald 25) This is about Gatsby who was imagining and thinking about his own dream and how he had this urge wanted to reach it . In chapter five Gatsby tells Daisy: “You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock.”(98) This represents the green light for Gatsby and how much he paid attention to Daisy and noticed everything about her. Gatsby says that the green light “burns all night” which could possibly show that Gatsby spends the nights watching the green light. After Daisy’s response, Nick says that Gatsby looked like he stopped thinking about the green light or his dream because at that moment they were together. At the end of the book, Nick says how Gatsby believed in the green light which was “the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us.”(189) This represents the idea of Gatsby’s vision of the American Dream which for him was to live in the past with Daisy like they used too.
