Happiness comes from within, one choses to be happy as they are choosing not to be sad.
Raymond Carver’s story, “Cathedral”, the film Life is Beautiful directed by Roberto Benigni, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech all have underlining theme of happiness. In the film and other text are linked through happiness. People can see how happiness is spread in three different situations. Whether it is through a Civil Right Movement, the Holocaust, or even through a situation where someone has to interact with someone else who is different from them, happiness can always be expressed in good faith. Humans are tested by life every day and it depends on their perspective whether they choose to be happy with how they deal with life

The civil rights movement was a difficult time of America’s history. It was naturally filled with hate and separation between the races. White people hated blacks because they thought they were a superior race and black people hated the white people for enslavement. There was hope for black people because some were release free from slavery and some of those people actually ended up dedicating their lives to free others. Happiness was found during the civil rights movement. The thought of freedom made people feel happy, the thought that everyone one day could become equal made people feel happy, and the love and support from friends and families definitely made people feel loved and happy. Another example of a time in history where happiness was hard to find, but some still found it, was during World War II. The Holocaust was probably one the world’s most depressing tragedies that took place during World War II. It was a mass murder of approximately six million Jews by Nazi Germany. However, there is no doubt that there were still those individuals that sought to be happy. Jews found happiness in the thought of freedom as well. They found happiness when they experienced positive, memorable moments with their loved ones. Some found happiness in the people they met at concentration camps and some found happiness within themselves. This story is about a husband who seems skeptical and stand-offish of his wife blind male friend. Craver explains how the husband in the story has a change in heart. Instead of being closed-minded, the husband finds happiness in a simple conversation with a man who gets a lot of attention with his wife. In this story, happiness is suggested when the husband was describing what a cathedral looked like to his wife’s friend, who also happens to be blind. He did it in a way that changed his perspective forever. When they were drawling out the cathedral with their hands, the husband mentioned that “his fingers rode my finders as my hand went over the paper. It was like nothing else in my life up to now” (Carver 11). The husband’s opinion changed about the blind man because he realized that the blind man could teach him something not any normal person could.
