Identity In “Beowulf” Each Character in “Beowulf” has a unique identity that contributes to how the epic plays out. They all have a past that builds their character and determines how they act when faced with Grendel. Identity is an important part of the story because without it to dictate the characters actions the story would be completely different. In the epic poem “Beowulf,” actions, beliefs, and values show the characters identities. The actions made by Beowulf and other characters are clear signs of their identities. A character’s actions can show what they believe is right and show what kind of person they are. Beowulf shows bravery as a part of his identity when he goes to defend Herot:

The Danes’ belief in God contributes to their identity as a kingdom. An example of their beliefs in Christianity is when the epic describes their king’s mead hall as if it was Heaven’s Gates:
Until they could see the gables
Of Herot, covered with hammered hold
And glowing in the sun--that most famous of all dwellings,
Towering majestic, its glittering roofs
Visible far across the land (203-207).
There are multiple examples of Christianity associated with Herot or Hrothgar that show the beliefs of the people. Because of their belief in God, the Dane’s are viewed as an enemy by Grendel. Another way to find more of a character’s identity is to look at what they value. What characters view as important are a useful way of learning more about who they are. For instance, when Hrothgar stays in his kingdom while everyone else flees:
So Grendel ruled, fought with the righteous,
One against many, and won; so Herot
Stood empty, and stayed deserted for years,

They affect how the person thinks, behaves, and reacts to situations. If the characters in “Beowulf” acted or thought any differently the epic would not have turned out the way it did. The story would cease to be what it is now. That is why the theme of identity is so important in the epic “Beowulf.” The characters all have a past that influences how they act and a future that they work towards.
