“The Bike” In the bike, by Gary Soto reveals a theme: taking risks is a learning experience. The story is about a boy got a new bike he was very excited and proud of himself. His mum told him not to turn the corner. The story takes place in a small town where The main character, a boy, has a conflict when his mum tells him if he turns the corner with his bike hungry dogs would come and attack him. He disobeys what his mum tells him. The author writes, “I was scared of riding on Sarah Street. Mum said hungry dogs lived on that street, and red anger lived in their eyes. Their throats were hard with extra bones from biting kids on bikes, she said.” The author writes “But I took the corner anyway, I didn't believe Mum.” This example reveals the boy was afraid to ride his bike on Sarah street because his mum told him hungry kid eating dogs lived on that street. Additionally, the theme is revealed through the boy talks to another kid, the kid tells him he's a big baby because he's riding a tricycle. The boy is trying to act tough by saying “you can run over my leg if you want.” And laid down on the side of the sidewalk. The other boy backed up and and ran over his leg. The other boy asked “did that hurt?” The boy was in a lot of pain, trying not to cry he said I'm fine. At the same time, we can see the theme later, when the boy regretted his poor decision.
