“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.” This quote from Elie Wiesel, who is the author of the best selling book Night and who himself survived the greatest injustice, the holocaust (Bio. Com), addresses an effective method to fighting injustice, protesting, which is found in both the readings on Socrates and Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter From Birmingham Jail. But what causes injustice so that “there may be times when we are powerless to prevent” it? From my desire to address the primary cause of injustice, resulted my thesis that ignorance anywhere is injustice everywhere.
In schools across the world, children learn that, despite rampant injustice committed by a few, there is still good in the honorable majority of mankind and the promise of righteousness under the law. These children mature idolizing both superheroes in society and those existing on the big screen, teaching that right will trump wrong and that good will prevail over evil. Unfortunately, however, this is not an all-encompassing theme outside of the fictional realm. In Louise Erdrich’s The Round House, Geraldine Coutts, a rape victim on a Native American reservation, finds only injustice in the very judicial system that sought to protect her.
Imagine the wicked House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) arrest an innocent man. The HUAC does not arrest the man because he has committed a murder, but because he is a communist. Many communists became victims of HUAC in the Red Scare crisis of the 1950s. These communists made the right decision to speak out for their freedom and against injustice. These communists also spoke out for their freedom of different beliefs.
The novel Copper Sun has many themes and life lessons throughout it. The novel follows a fifteen year old girl named Amari as she is put into slavery, beaten, raped, and her escape from captivity (Sharon M. Draper 15, 57, 205). The novel describes how Amari builds strong bonds with those around her and how she never stops believing that freedom is just around the corner. Even with all of the chaos and adventures that takes place throughout the novel the author still has themes in the story either intentionally or unintentionally. Sharon M. Draper used many themes throughout the novel and also left room for the reader to interpret themes of their own.
Issues of Social and Economic Justice Throughout my experience in the Panhandle Promise Project, I had the opportunity to closely examine the injustice many of the clients experience based on their race, economic status, or in the criminal justice system. Since the starting of America’s war on drugs longer sentencing for drug offences that in violent crimes, there has been an increase of the number of minorities who are currently in prison (Wormer, Kaplan, and Juby (2012). For the children having a parent incarcerated affects them in several different ways, such as having a higher risk of being place in foster care (Andersen and Wildeman, 2014) , poor school performance (Eddy et al., 2014), food insecurity (Turney, 2014c), antisocial behavioral problems (Jarjoura et al., 2011f). For women who have been release from prison new barriers limit the assistance they will received, the ineligibility for food stamps (Travis, 2002), and in some cases the loss of their children custody (Welsh, 2014b).
The social injustice I chose is police brutality against blacks/people of color. Police officers are using excessive force, and in many cases resulting in deaths. Due to the police field being primarily white, its looked at as a racial attack on non-whites. Due to the racial difference, it looks as though communities with a high amount of colored people are being targeted to brutalize, harass, and be murdered by police. There are reports with evidence of police killing, and issuing beatings that are uncalled for in cases, such as traffic stops, pools, etc.
The main conflict revolves around Amari’s capture and her journey to America. The conflict shows the protagonist, Amari, facing the inhumane practices that were used during this time. The Copper Sun’s conflict can be both internal and external. Sharon describes how people's hope slowly dimmed to nothing. The author states, “Why couldn't I have died with my family?”(Draper,31).

Justice Has Not Been Served “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” This quote by Martin Luther King Jr. discusses the issue of influence amongst countries throughout the world. If an act of mistreatment is exposed to the public, it manipulates the opinions of the innocent, causing widespread havoc. Humans are dealing with this dilemma today, but the realm of literature is dealing with it as well. The protagonists of the dystopian texts Flawed by Cecelia Ahern and Rash by Pete Hautman are victims of nefarious social classes, and both are isolated from society for their own good.
Social injustices have been an apparent theme throughout history for many years. Anti-Semitism and Racial discrimination are just two of the many examples of social injustices that have been exhibited in our society. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, both novels share the theme of Social Injustice. Discrimination has plagued the world since the beginning of time and continues to happen today. People can be discriminated against simply for looking different or following different customs. It has been implemented by governments throughout history, but it has also been practiced individually. “In Response to Executive Order 9066” and “Legal alien” are two poems that discuss the topic of discrimination. “In Response to Executive Order 9066,” by Dwight Okita is a poem that describes the possible interment of a Japanese-American during World War 2.
Injustice means lack of fairness or justice, and/or an unjust act or occurrence according to the dictionary. Upon reading three stories of injustice, one might find that some reactions are more understandable than others. ‘Young Goodman Brown’, ‘The Lesson’, and ‘Saboteur’ are all stories of a character being handed some form of injustice. Mr. Chiu in ‘Saboteur’ had the most understandable response to his injustice. Goodman Brown learns about all the bad in the world from a dream, Sylvia learns about the injustice of racial discrimination, and Mr. Chiu learns about injustice through the police.
In the National Geographic article, A Life Revealed, it describes the interesting story of the woman behind the infamous 1985 cover of one of the issues of a National Geographic magazine. Readers of that issue instantly locked into Sharbat Gula’s majestic eyes and felt sympathy for her. As the article further discusses, Gula’s life was ravished by wars in the Middle East. Some of the more prominent hardships were: her child dying in infancy, the bombings, all the times she was forced to move to a new refugee camp, and her not being able to spend winters with her husband due to asthma. The overall theme of the article is that Gula’s life was bullied by others choices, predominantly mens.
In the short story, “Harrison Bergeron” Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. relies on the use of irony to indicate where our country will stand once we have gained total equality amongst each other. The theme in “Harrison Bergeron” is that the government cannot enforce equality within the people. The author creates a fictional visualization of the future in the year 2081, where the government controls the people and tortures them in order to maintain “equal opportunity” in their world to prove why it is impossible to achieve absolute equality in the world. Vonnegut dives into a whole other level of uniformity in Harrison Bergeron by focusing on eliminating advantages in appearance, intelligence, strength, and other unique abilities rather than focusing on
In detail, there are many other injustices. For example, in middle-east there are always wars and battles. Children and women are killed because of terrorist attack. The combats caused by resources such as petroleum and natural gas ruined the life of people who live in middle-east.
