Placed in a dystopian society, Frenchie finds himself slowly losing his innocence through trials of survival, inner strength, and the support of growth and friendship. In Cherie Dimaline’s novel, The Marrow Thieves (2017). since the start of Frenchie and his group’s voyage, he has gradually lost his innocence while exposed to situations that call for mature responses. Characters that came into Frenchie’s life affected how he viewed everything. Frenchie shed his innocent and fearful childhood all because of the support and love he received from the group. Rose showed significant interest in Frenchie. Since they laid eyes on each other, they created a connection between them. It is clear that Frenchie finds Rose attractive and shows interest in his inner thoughts. Not only was Rose a romantic interest for Frenchie, but a piece that was needed for Frenchie’s personal growth “she made me feel like I needed to be a better person just through her existing”( Dimaline 32). This quote powerfully demonstrates his feelings about Rose. Her impact on Frenchie’s personal development can branch from his desire to protect or his ability to care for others. At the novel’s beginning, Frenchie lost almost anyone he cared about. Now that Rose came along, he had someone that could connect with him strongly. Frenchie finally had someone to care about deeply, which built his motive to protect her and the group. He wants to make her feel as safe as he once felt with Mitch. Frenchie is also extremely determined in protecting his new family. This could be because of the group's affection and comfort toward him.“now I had a different family to take care of. My job was to hunt, and scout, and build camp, to protect the others. I winced even thinking of it. My failure”( Dimaline 182). He recognizes the possibility of failing in his role as group leader, but he doesn't want to let his family down.
