Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “A right delayed is a right denied” in his “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” He says this meaning that if a right takes too long to become one it is denied by those who make the laws. A recurring theme of this comes when talking about the play, The Visit. Friedrich Durrenmatt was born in Konolfingen, Switzerland by a minister whose father was a satirist. Durrenmatt studied literature and philosophy and began taking his writing seriously. This is shown within the play when Durrenmatt introduces the black panther after Claire shares that she used to call Ill her black panther. In act two, the Butler shares with Claire “The black panther escaped, Madam” then when Claire asks if he is dead the butler replies with “He’s dead, Madam, stretched out in front of Ill’s shop.”The symbolism of the black panther and Ill demonstrates the use of foreshadowing because after the black panther escaped and announced dead later on, Ill tried escaping, but was then killed later on in the play. Another example, can be seen in act one, when Claire and the doctor meet, and Claire questioningly asks “Do you make out Death Certificates?”This foreshadows Ill’s death. It also foreshadows that Claire has had Ill’s death planned since before she even got to the town of Guellen. With the foreshadowing being used throughout the play, it helps the reader anticipate what is going to happen before it does which we should have done with World War 2. This goes to show that many obvious things happened in World War 2 that could have been stopped before it got too late but it
