Loss can significantly impact the course of one's life, whether it is authentic or fictional. In a novel, a loss can propel the plot forward and give the characters a conflict. Ruta Sepetys uses many examples of this in the novel, "Salt to the Sea". Although each character endures a loss, there are many different reactions, thus making the story more interesting. The way a character responds to loss can help the reader interpret what they are like and how they will affect the story. Emilia responds to the loss of her innocence by concocting a story and convincing herself that it is the truth. She reveals her secret when she says, “Most days I actually believed my own story” (Sepetys 238). She was so traumatized by the event that she convinced herself of something false. Alfred wants to prove his worth to others because he lost the chance to prove himself to his family. “I cannot run very fast or jump very far. My gifts lie in other areas. My father was terribly disappointed…” (Sepetys 270). Alfred is aware that he does not live up to his father's standards. Throughout the novel, the reader witnesses other characters ridiculing him. Alfred, however, does not understand why. But despite receiving all of these negative comments, he continues to work to gain others' approval. Florian lost his family and therefore stole the amber swan. “‘I'm so sorry, Florian,’ she said, crying. ‘Your father…you're too late’” (Sepetys 194). Once he discovered that he was being lied to, he craved revenge. He proceeded to seal the prize possession of the amber room to make the nazis pay for what they did to him and his family.
