Like when the men in Paul’s unit went to the bar and tried to get French woman. Or like when they would be behind the front resting, they would joke and have fun like anyone else. The part that surprised me the most was when the training officer was put in the front, and realized how bad it was. He then tries to become friends with the very men he despised during training.

In many ways it develops comradeship between the two as they begin to see each other as equals. Another important event is when Paul cares for the young soldier he kills. He looks at the young man and tries to let him know that he wants to provide aid so the young soldier will not be in pain (219). Paul even reaches down for his canteen and when he cannot find it goes and collects water from the ground which the man rapidly drinks (219-220). This shows camaraderie because Paul is feeling guilty for killing this young man and because of this he works to help the young man by making his last hours on Earth less painful.
Unlike many of the German soldiers, Paul hesitates to throw a grenade at an oncoming French soldier whom he makes eye contact with. Paul describes this incident by saying, “I raise my hand, but I cannot throw into those strange eyes…. then the head rises up, a hand, a movement, and my hand-grenade flies through the air and into him.” (113) Paul is unable to immediately throw the grenade because of the eye contact he makes with the French soldier. When making eye contact, Paul sees that the so soldier is human.
In many parts of the book you see cooperation of the friends. In chapter five, Paul and Kat are sitting across from each other, they have just killed a goose together and are now cooking it. Paul says “We sit opposite one another, Kat and I, two soldiers in shabby coats, cooking a goose in the middle of the night. We don’t talk much, but I believe we have a more complete communion with one another than even lovers have.”

Revealing the details of his experiences after being on the front, the narrator describes the trouble he has had appreciating the simple and beautiful things life has to offer when suddenly “a cry of bitter dead men who will never attend a gentle maker of musical joy”(Gwendolyn 11-12). Gwendolyn shows the struggle of listening to the piano when he suddenly is thinking back to memories on the front.
In addition, Paul was injured in the book and goes home and stays with her family while he recovers. He is no longer able to relate to his family, since it is very difficult to think and have emotions and at the same time with much death all around him in the war. There is much talk of how he and his friends do not think about deep things, but just think about eating and silly things. His father and people over all his people want me to tell them stories of war and hate Paul because their experiences are horrible. Paul has just returned to the fight and basically everyone in the book is wounded and dies.
Paul and his comrade, Kat, developed a bond of friendship and brotherhood during the dismal times of the war, which helped their individual desires to survive and protect their fellow soldiers. Love in the story is like the energy in a kid, it drives the story and the characters in the story insane. For example, in the story love is what drove Hero into dying and will end killing Tara at the end, “Why should you go on living when she and I are dead? When no one remembers our names?”
Instead of being the essence of separation they bring the two individuals together against the regime. It needs to be emphasised that love is irrelevant in the story because it does not exist. The relationship between the two characters is in response to the sexual deprivation that is installed by the oppressive rule of Big Brother. The Party cares very little about love, because that emotion was banished through the isolation and fear. It is their biggest adversary, sexual lust that must constantly be tamed because they know that“ Sexual deprivation induced hysteria, which was desirable because it could be transformed into war - fever and leader worship” (139).

Love is a feeling we all search for and desire. This need leads us to force this emotion at times when we may not truly feel it. Because of this, it is often difficult to tell if our love is genuine or out of necessity. In Ernest Hemingway’s novel, A Farewell to Arms, Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley begin a complicated relationship during World War I. Amongst the pain and and loss of the war, it is unclear at times to understand if their love is authentic or purely a way for them to cope.
