According to Matshona Dhliwayo, “Love is the brightest star in life’s darkest skies.” In the Novel The Sun is Also a Star, tells the tale of two 17-year olds who fall deeply in love with one another after going through a number of twists and turns during a single day in New York City. One of the most significant themes in the book is that Love is the most powerful thing in the whole universe.
One way in which Daniel and Natasha’s love demonstrates it’s power is by helping them overcome obstacles. For example, when Natasha faces the possibility of being deported back to Jamaica, Daniel’s love for her inspires him to help her in any way her can. As he says to her “I’m going to help you. I’m not going to let them take you away” (Yoon 209). Despite the odds against them, Daniel’s love for Natsha goves him the strength and determination to fight for her. Similarly, Natasha’s love for Daniel helps her to persevere in the face of Adversity. As she says to him, “I love you.I know that sounds stupid but it’s true. Natasha and Daniel’s love story is the main focus of the novel, and the author, Nicola Yoon, portrays their love as a force that can overcome any obstacle. Despite their different backgrounds and beliefs, Natasha and Daniel are drawn to each other and their love is a testament to the power of connection. Yoon also uses literary devices such as metaphors and imagery to convey the imagine of love. Foe example, Natasha describes love as “a single word, a wispy thing, a word no bigger or longer than an edge. That’s what it is; an edge; a razor. It draws up through the center of your life, cutting everything in two.” This metaphor highlights the intensity of love and how it can transform a person’s life.
