“What good is a hometown if everyone you know is gone?”(Rudy Archuleta). This quote was a prevailing theme in the movie “Milagro Beanfield War”, which takes place in a small town, where everyone’s professions are important in helping keep the town dynamic and flowing. At the beginning of this film we are introduced to the “grandfather” of the town, Amarante, and his friend and advice giver, the old spirit of the Milagro town .We are also introduced to a lot of other characters in the story- Joe, his wife, Rudy, and the sheriff- that have dynamic roles in the plot. The use of resources is a prevalent theme in the story. For the town, because resources are so limited, it quickly becomes an important focal point. Moreover, chaos is started in the town when the town’s local farmer, Joe Mondragon, accidently breaks ground into the neighboring field’s irrigation system. Instead of fixing the portion of the irrigation that leaks into his field, Joe uses this to his advantage and grows a bean field. The town and the developers who own the neighboring field are shocked that Joe decided to use the water for his field. The developer sends in addition help from the town’s sheriff and state deputy, Kyril Montanna, to cease the use of the water illegally. This forces Joe to leave town to flee the police and Montanna. While away, the town comes together and decides that the developers should not have this much control over the towns resources, especially the strict water laws which favor the rich. They decide to band together and support Joe’s beanfield. The developer in the end recalls Kyril Montana, who had succeeded in capturing and arresting Joe, in an effort to resist a small town war. The movie ends with the town celebrating their triumph over the developer and their new found
