Compare: In the following essay, I will be comparing how the “other worlds” in “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury and “Nethergrave” by Gloria Skurzynski impacted the characters in the real world. In both stories the use of technology is the main theme and how the characters choose to use it is what determines the impact in their real world. Both main characters were able to experience the advancement of technology in the “other world.” Eckels got to go back in time through a time machine, while; Jeremy was able to swivel “powerfully and explore a domain …in a perfectly coordinated body.” Technology gave both characters the opportunity to do something unimaginable and what they perceived to be powerful in their real worlds. For Jeremy the “other world” created a safe space for him to feel triumphant and forget about all the negative things happening in his real world. For Eckels the “other world” allowed him to travel “back sixty million years to bag the biggest game ever in all of Time.” He was granted the opportunity and the “severest thrill” of killing a T-Rex. In “A Sound of Thunder” the main character Eckels was impacted in a negative way for not following directions. On his return to the real world, Eckels lost his life and the course of history was shifted impacting all humanity. In the “Nethergrave” the main character Jeremy was impacted in a positive way, allowing him to escape society’s harshness. He was granted the opportunity to choose to be strong and powerful and living forever in Nethergrave with the promise of never feeling lonely or abandoned again. Now this we do not know: Will Jeremy be allowed to come back to the real world every time he chooses to do so? Or, will he be forced to stay forever in Nethergrave causing conflict and desperation for his family in the real
