In the book, One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus, the author uses Bronwyn all around the story to show that even though someone may seem perfect, they also have flaws they hide. It begins with five students, Bronwyn, Cooper, Nate, Addy, and Simon, in detention when suddenly Simon was killed, supposedly by one of the remaining four in the room and they find out who was behind the murder while Simon reveals their darkest secrets from beyond the grave. The theme is shown throughout the story as Bronwyn, who’s a nice and responsible person, supports the theme as her actions have been shown as mean, uncaring, or irresponsible. While at the police station, Robin, “... leans over my shoulder again, and reads what I wrote at the end of sophomore year. Fuck off and die, Simon,” (McManus 205). This comment made by Bronwyn shows even nice people may think grimly of others even if they don’t show it since she said something without thinking that could negatively affect Simon which may or may not have played a role on why Simon didn’t like Bronwyn. While contacting Mrs. Macauley, she’s informed that, “... Eli, he asks that you don’t involve yourself further… these murder club meetings are becoming a regular thing,”(McManus 300, 309). Even though Nate’s lawyer has instructed Bronwyn to not be involved in the case anymore, she still does which was even shown near the beginning of the story when Bronwyn disregarded her lawyers advice to not speak with the other suspects. This shows even though Bronwyn is nice and rule-abiding almost all the time, can act rude or uncaring when she isn’t around others and may even do or say rash
