In Other Words For Home by Jasmine Warga, is a modern-day story of immigration. The story starts off with a girl named Jude. She is just an ordinary girl who lives in Syria but her whole world is about to be turned upside down when violence breaks out in her country. Her mom takes her to live with her Uncle Mazin in America. Jude has to leave her older brother and her Baba. She now has to learn how to be a middle eastern girl in America while also making new friends along the way. The author uses inner thinking, first-person perspective, and description for readers to understand how hard it is to show how difficult it is to get used to a new place/culture.
The author uses inner thinking to help readers understand Judes's perspective and personality. Jude often does not say what she thinks and part of her character is that she cares about what others think, so she doesn't say what she thinks just in case it upsets someone. When Jude is answering questions about Syria in class everyone was surprised, she is telling her classmates that Syria is not fully a desert country even though it's in the Middle East and Jude thinks “I like being able to surprise people” this shows how people in the United States have a stereotype in mind about Syria based on one piece of information and they don't give time

Jude sees many forms of wealth in America, but she also sees the homeless and less fortunate. When Jude saw the results of the 9/11 attack and saw the hate crimes done to Muslims and the middle eastern for something they didn't do, A stranger tells Jude to go back to her country, and unknown people spray paint the message “terrorists” on Layla’s parents’ restaurant. She was scared that something like that could happen to her. It made it even harder for Jude to try to fit in because she had been trying to fit in for so long but yet she still couldn’t quite understand the culture in
