In Othello, two main themes that peaked my interest were appearance compared to reality and discrimination. Throughout the play, Iago plays many different roles. He creates a persona of honesty and straightforwardness. He appears to be a trustworthy and loyal friend and is smart enough to place ideas in other characters heads to pit them against each other. By doing so, he does not have to physically get his hands dirty. Roderigo trusts him and does not have any idea how deceitful his “friend” is. Although Iago divulged that he served Othello only because he had a mission to move up in rank, Roderigo was still naïve to Iago’s manipulative nature.
