Pressure and its Entangling Effects in The Crucible Pressure is a challenge that is a daily trial that twists and takes over the agency of numerous people. It is comparable to a weed, it entangles itself around an indecisive person bending the victim to its will. Although, resistance against the pressure is present, the amount of willpower to not be taken into the depths of making the popular choice is an amount that the majority of people do not have. Arthur Miller paints a picture of how people react to pressure in the play, The Crucible. Multiple characters were under an unimaginable amount of pressure; however, the people who were mainly affected were Reverend Parris, Reverend Hale, and John Proctor.

This leads to the girls naming other people and Reverend Hale trying to have the accused confess. Once Rebecca Nurse is accused and multiple others refuse to confess, Hale has enough, “ I denounce these proceedings, I quit this court” (Act 3,127). After stating this Hale leaves Salem for an amount of time. This quote shows that Reverend Hale has lost faith in the court and can no longer stand to be part of these accusations. When he comes to the court about his affair with her, Proctor puts his own name in jeopardy; as a result, he is thrown into prison and accused of witchcraft. After rotting in prison for quite a while, John Proctor concludes that in order to save his life he must confess; however, when he goes to confess Judge Danforth declares that his confession will be made public, Proctor responds in the following manner, “You will not use me! I am no Sarah Good or Tituba, I am John Proctor! You will not use me! It is no part of salvation that you should use me!” (Act 4, 142-143) This shows that even though the court does pressure John Proctor into confessing, he does not follow through with it and ultimately hangs for not bending to the will of the court.
