Raymond’s Run: Thematic Essay In Raymond’s Run by Tori Cade Bambara, Bambara discusses about familial relationship and how girls perceive each other. Squeaky, a young girl with a passion of running, has a fervent relationship with her brother Raymond, whom she takes care of most of the time and would support him and stand up for him against anyone at any cost. Moreover, Squeaky further wise explains on how she comprehends on how girls recognize each other as “fake” by their smiles. An example on one of the themes, how girls perceive each other, are exhibited on page 172, “Gretchen smiles but it’s not a smile, and I’m thinking that girls never really smile at each other […]” and another example of the theme, familial relationship, is found on page 168, “[…] people call him my little brother cause he needs looking after cause he’s not quite right […] if anybody has anything to say about his big head they have to come by me.” How this example shows this theme on girls’ perspective on each other, is because Squeaky sees Gretchen, “to smile, but not really smiling.”, which in this case Squeaky observes her as “fake”. The example on how the theme of familial relationship is demonstrated is because of Squeaky’s strong will and love on protecting Raymond and how she looks after him.
