Characters of Rebecca and The Great Gatsby share some similarities and differences when it comes to actions and attitudes of the characters. The status of one 's social class can shape them as they grow. Growing up being used to being pampered everyday of your life would have created a different person than if you had been born into a poor family like Jay Gatsby had. Jay Gatsby came from a poor family and was quite unhappy which ultimately lead him to leave his home behind and run away to pursue a brighter future. Some characters have a damaged psyche which were caused by the events within the story. Jay Gatsby and Mrs. Danvers have a damaged psyche and arefixated on certain things such as Jay Gatsby 's love for Daisy Buchanan and Mrs. Danvers love for Rebecca. Jay Gatsby met a young woman named Daisy Buchanan while they were young and fell in love with her wanting to marry her. Jay Gatsby 's obsession with Daisy Buchanan led to his psyche being damaged and his attitude changing more towards the end of his time left alive. Jay Gatsby wanted to be with Daisy Buchanan more than anything and spent much of his time fixated on her. "He looked-and this is said in all contempt for the babbled slander of his harden-as if he had "killed a man" (Fitzgerald 134). People who chase something all their life just to find out that it 's no longer within their grasp can lose their grip on reality. People with a damaged psyche can lose sight of themselves if enough time is given for them to do so. Mrs. Danver cared for Rebecca and spent much of her time looking after and caring for her throughout the day leading to her hatred of Mrs. de Winter after Rebecca 's death. After finding out that Maxim de Winter had married again Mrs. Danvers began to become obsessed with the idea that she could get rid of Mrs. de Winter due to her love for Rebecca. Losing someone that you care for in your life and then having to care for someone else that has taken their place could lead to resentment towards them. Losing something that has played an important part in your everyday life and expected to move on would lead some individuals
