Salem reputation is tied together with where you stand in the social chain. Respect has more importance on a personal level. John had a conflict with himself in the end of act IV to either stand for himself and save his own honor but to also to save or to lie and save his life; John has a lot of pride for his religion and for his family.
Elizabeth Proctor has been accused of practicing witchcraft which in the village in Salem is seen as sin. She has been giving a chance to stand up for her husband, John Proctor, who has also been accused of practicing witchcraft.
