In To Kill a Mockingbird, respect is a key aspect of the book. Respect is shown in various ways throughout the book. Respect is very important for multiple reasons. One reason is what you reap you sow, another is that having and showing respect can help you build relationships, thirdly showing respect shows your morals. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, respect is shown in many places including how each character approaches the way they play their role in society. Respect is also shown by the way the characters interact with each other and the current main event being racial inequality.

Firstly, what you reap is what you sow. Meaning, by showing respect you most likely will receive respect in return. One main example of this in TKAM is how Atticus treats everyone in Maycomb county regardless of their race, profession, or social status. “You never really understand a man until you see it from his point of view.” This quote shows that Atticus takes more into character than a skin …show more content…

In To Kill a Mockingbird, one example of a relationship being strengthened is when Atticus says, “I’m simply defending a negro, his name’s Tom Robinson.” This quote really shows that regardless of the race relation in Maycomb, Atticus will still show Tom respect and help him out. This event later leads to Atticus being respected and having a relationship with Tom and the black community. Another quote is when Atticus says, “Before I can live with other folks I’ve got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule, is a person’s conscience.” This second quote once again shows how Atticus is willing to fix anything he needs to in order to have a strong relationship with other citizens in Maycomb.
