Everyone is fighting their own battles that other people don’t know about. This is a theme of the book Ruby in the Sky. This book is about a 12 year old girl named Ruby and recently, she's been moving to a lot of different places. She doesn't want her new classmates to ask or know about her father, and she definitely does not want them to know that her mother was arrested. She goes through challenges and becomes friends with Abigail, the “bird lady” and Ahmed, a Syrian refugee. The theme that everyone is fighting their own battles is clear in the book Ruby in the Sky by Jeanne Zulick Ferrulo through character A and character B’s stories. The theme that people can be fighting their own battles can be determined by looking at Abigail's story. In the story, Ruby has to choose to be another person for a wax museum and she ends up being Abigail: “There was so much pain. It was a lot easier to disappear than deal with it” (Zulick Ferroulo 269). Many people made rumors about Abigail when they didn’t even know her story. She was overwhelmed about what was happening and thought it would be easier if no one knew she was even there and pretend like nothing happened. At the end of the story, Ruby was with her mom while thinking about how she felt. “Suddenly, I felt so light, watching her. I felt like a bird released from a cage it had been stuck in for a very long time-- eager to go fly and be free”(Zulick Ferruolo 282). Ruby grew more confident and made new friends. She felt free and felt that she too is an amazing human who can rely on other people and letting others rely on her too. Ruby felt locked up and couldn’t express her feelings. After becoming friends with Abigail, they shared their problems with each other and grew their relationship. Therefore, Ruby’s life story portrays the theme of internal battles and
