When people think of sacrifice, they think of dramatic moments where a character stands or jumps in front of danger as their friends watch, screaming out for them to come back. But the actual definition of sacrifice is the act of giving up or allowing injury for the sake of something else. And sacrifice can be those dramatic moments, but they can also be calm, quiet moments that most people would not realize are sacrifice. But what motivates someone to sacrifice themselves? The Witch’s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec revolves around one of Loki’s wives, and the mother of monsters’, Angrboda. Odin was the one to make the Aesir’s burn Angrboda three times and after her last burning she decided to hide away. But she risks her being found out by staying in one place when Loki knows where she lives because he is the blood brother of Odin. And even if he did not mean to reveal her, Odin could unknowingly follow Loki. The last part of Angrboda’s journey to learn about herself is to help send Baldur off. Odin calls Angrboda to help so that he would be able to ask, “‘Are you prepared for what comes next?’ ‘Yes’...’Are you?’ He was silent, but his one eye followed her as she gave the ship a gentle push and it slid off its rollers and into the sea” (267). Odin asking for her help could have been a trick because he is able to use seid but she goes to help anyway because she knows that when Baldur goes to join her daughter that Ragnarok would start soon. And Angrboda has seen a new world that has been created after Ragnarok and that Odin, and the other Aesir’s, would die. Finally, during Ragnarok, Skadi goes to avenge her father.
