Scrooge appears to desire being alone; he does not value human connections. Scrooge is an individual powered by routine and when he saw Jacob Marley’s face on his doorknocker it put him on edge. For example, “Nobody under the table, nobody under the sofa [. . . ] Nobody under the bed; nobody in the closet; nobody in his dressing-gown,” (1383).
One song that relates to the theme of Past, Present and Future: The Threat of Time, is Summertime’s End by Weather. This song is about regrets of the past but has a positive outlook of the future. Lyrics of the song include “I’m sorry I did wrong” showing regret of something he did in the past. This relates to the theme because it shows how someone can show regret from past decisions (the threat of time). Scrooge feels this when he visits past Christmases with the Ghost of Christmas Past.
Scrooge appears irredeemable in the novella, because the anecdotes describing his callous and bad behavior are more numerous and dramatic than those described after his transformation. The majority of the first stave was written by Dickens to show the reader Scrooge’s horrible nature. In Stave One, Scrooge is approached by two gentleman canvassing for charitable donations, of which he declines to donate. In an appeal to emotion, the gentlemen then inform Scrooge that many of the poor would rather die than subject themselves to the governments assistance. In response Scrooge says, “If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.”
We come to learn that Scrooge changes with his attitude. One quote from the text that accurately confirms this is…“No warmth could warm, no wintry weather could chill him. ”(page 3). This excerpt from the text explains how troubled and insecure he is inside, using a metaphorical perspective. We, as the readers, can draw inferences and conclusions on how loathsome he seems.
Scrooge obviously doesn’t like the presence of Fred nor does Scrooge like the idea of poor people celebrating christmas. This causes conflict between these family members, and highlights the negative issues within the relationship through fighting.
