In perhaps one of the most representative and thought provoking novels about the World War II era, Catch-22, by Joseph Heller, brought on much controversy surrounding its release. Based on Heller’s own war experiences in World War II, Catch -22 expresses the true realism surrounding war and its gruesome nature. Expressing war without extra ornamentation or storytelling, Catch -22, describes the violence, lunacy, and conflict with authority in war. Arousing critics and readers of the time, Catch-22, sparked conflict regarding whether it was too controversial as a “bare-bones” war novel and the derogatory perspective on sexual encounters within it. Although some readers believe that Catch- 22 should be banned due to is controversial elements
Playing for Keeps is an exceptional novel written by Joan Lowery Nixon. Rosie and Glory have a relationship that is as close as two people can be without being actually related. She uses Roman literature, to find more information about the ruling classes. The chapter goes through the jobs women held and how they varied by social status. The final chapter of the book reviews the effects of Religion on Roman women. It relates the topic to modern day Italian customs today.
Not caring for others can make someone not see the big things in life. In the short story Box Nine by Rob Thomas, a girl named Teesha is doing a community service project during Thanksgiving to give food to the poor in order to walk the stage for graduation. Teesha is accompanied with other students throughout this community service project who don’t care about the poor people and only about themselves. Selfishness can make a person not care for others because the students questioned the poor people's life choices. When the students delivered box six the students saw a man puffing cigarettes and wondered why he was able to afford cigarettes and not food.
In this paper I will argue that the text was intended for Christians instead of the Romans based on the way Perpetua is praised in the text and how Perpetua’s disobedience towards her father who was the paterfamilias was most shocking to the Romans. Essentially this autobiography was written for Christian’s, particularly for those who were or later
Procopius ruins the reputation of both Antonina and Theodora, because of their sexual indecency when they were young. In The Secret History, Procopius refers to Theodora as having “not an ounce of modesty in the little hussy (Procopius 37).” Antonina was accused of having a secret affair with her son, Theodosius, which vindicated others’ belief that she was filled with a great amount of “lust”. He rarely had anything positive to say about the two women, but many of their actions could have stemmed from their troubled childhoods. For example, Theodora became a young prostitute that sold her body in order to make a living, and Antonina was said to have lived a “profligate” life where she threw out “all moral restraint” before marrying Belisarius.

Perversion of Justice: The Corruptibility of Bureaucracies in “Catch-22” Perversion of justice is a theme seen throughout Joseph Heller’s “Catch-22”: justice, in this paper, is defined as the upholding of Western, democratic ideals (due process, presumption of innocence until proven guilty, etc.). The western ideal of justice is mocked in “Catch-22”, and the military is the source of the mockery: furthermore, the individuals in charge of making decisions and rules, e.g., Catch-22, are state officials, not elected representatives of the people. Since the individuals in control of the institution are not elected and are part of a system of government, the organization is a bureaucracy. Hence, the perversion of justice throughout Joseph Heller’s “Catch-22”, albeit endemic to mankind in general, is an implicit criticism of the corruptibility of bureaucracies.
Imagine being able to tell someone to do something and they did it, no matter how awful it was. Justinian furthered his mission and began building safe houses for women who were trying to get out of being a prostitute which helped reflect his pure faith as emperor. This essay investigates how Justinian used Theodora to perfect his society and assesses how successful his legislature, safe houses, and punishments were in regards to molding his own utopia. Although, some people say that Theodora was the one who took advantage of her relationship with Justinian, the laws that she got passed only put more control over women and their bodies. Justinian changed these laws that seemed to be made for Theodora and the improvement of women's status but were instead for changing the parts of society that he didn't like as
War is often regarded as a fight for freedom and democracy. However, how can we expect to achieve freedom and democracy when the military that is fighting for these rights does not grant its soldiers any. The novel Catch 22 written by Joseph Heller has many great examples of military bureaucracy and its negative effects. In fact, the name Catch 22 is a representation of this problem that takes place in the book the law Catch 22 states that to get out of combat duty the officer has to be crazy, but if he asks to be grounded then it means the officer is sane therefore he can’t be grounded. The Catch 22 rule shows how bureaucrats don’t listen to logical explanations and justify their decisions with absurd rules that only cause harm.
In Sickness and in Health Fall 2016 Paper 1 Callisto’s Vacant Sense of Agency In Tales From Ovid, Ted Hughes translates many mythological tales from the work Metamorphoses. These tales written by Ovid add a very grotesque nature to many classic Roman myths. By retracing these stories, he successfully inputs a series of audacious ideas when looking into the role of genders in ancient Rome and contrasting the sense of agency between women and men. More specifically in the tale of Callisto, Ovid unveils controversial myth where a woman loses her sense of control on her own body.
Focused on Rome’s corruption, where prostitutes selling sex on the filthy streets, priests who made waste of their duties, rushing through mass, so fast that it
“Is Survival Selfish” is an argumentative text written by Lane Wallace. The text focuses on the question of whether survival is an act of selfishness or intelligence. Author Wallace also draws your attention to whether saving someone in dire situations is altruism or idiocy. Throughout the story, the author provides evidence in means to support her claim and reasons. Wallace believes that “self-preservation” isn’t always instinctual and there are many factors involved, including the fact that every survival testing situation is different.
For example, during “The 1972 Andes Flight Disaster,” some of the people that survived only did it by “collectively making a decision to eat flesh from the bodies of their dead comrades, beginning with the pilot” (CommonLit staff 7) If some people wouldn 't have done this, everyone would have died and that would make this horrifying tragedy even worse than it was. According to the story, Is Survival Selfish?, “Self- preservation is supposedly an instinct” (Wallace 317).
