Youth is a period of confusion. It has been described as both the worst and the best of times. During this time, it is common to have an identity crisis. What exactly am I? What kind of person do I want to be? With expectations from family, society, and, most importantly, yourself, answering these questions can be difficult. T. Coraghessan Boyle's 2017 short story She's the bomb depicts a teenage girl's difficulties with the transition from youth to adulthood through themes such as lack of commutation, identity, pressure, and egoism. The short-story describes how a teenage girl calls in a bomb to her college graduation because she is actually not graduating, and is afraid of how her mom will react. The story begins in media-res with a string of text messages between Hailey Phegler and an unidentified person. She expresses her desire to kill herself and her deep sadness during the conversation. Hailey's desperate actions are foreshadowed. The story is written in a chronological but includes flashbacks to before she was depressed. The story is unique in the way it’s told …show more content…
Another important theme in the story is “communication”. Because of the lack of communication from Hailey, she can’t tell her how she feels about college and how she will not graduate. She also states that she would rather die or have a school shooting than tell her mom. (42-43). This communication breakdown between Hailey and her mother ultimately drives Hailey to make an impulsive decision. We can also see how Hailey is way more comfortable over text-messages, and how she speaks way more up though the messages. This story really shows how commutation can be key. Because Hailey went through a depressive period she stopped participating in social-events and her courses which led to that she didn’t graduate. If she had spoken up about her feelings to councilors or perhaps just her family, she could have gotten help, and maybe she would have
