In novels, authors use their language and setting to help the reader visualize how the character is and what the things going around him. In David Guterson’s novel “Snow Falling on Cedar,” The author shows Kabuo Miyamoto (the person who was accused of murder) how felt and looked when he was being accused of murder. The author describes Miyamoto as a fearless, quiet, introspective man. who is determined to prove his innocence, comparing the setting of the courtroom to the outside showing the differences between both. To begin with, the man who is being accused of murder (Kabuo Miyamoto) has many characteristics being described as he is sitting down waiting to get trialed. The author uses the quote “The accused man, Kabuo Miyamoto, sat proudly upright with a rigid grace, his palms placed softly on the defendant’s table—the posture of a man who has detached himself insofar as this is possible at his own trial.”to show how Miyamoto is not scared and he knows in his heart he is going to win the case because he did not do it. It is a small old place that is dark and gives off a bad sad eerie feeling to it, while in contrast outside the ballroom the quote “evaporated. The snowfall, which he witnessed out of the corners of his eyes—furious, wind-whipped flakes against the windows—struck him as infinitely beautiful. Illustrates how outside he thinks it's beautiful snowy weather because he is so used to seeing nothing. No sunlight, rain, snow, nothing. He is stuck in four walls in a gloomy place that he got placed in because of nothing, which shows why there is such a difference between them and the message the author is trying to
