Courtesy is the most important word in the story, “Little Things Are Big” by Jesus Colon, because it helps convey the theme. In the story, there is a writer on the way to Brooklyn who sees a twenty year old lady in need of help. The lady had a baby, a suitcase, a three year old girl, and a five year old boy, but the writer can’t decide whether or not to help the lady. Throughout the story the author talks about courtesy and how it impacts lives.
Asian Americans came to America with hopes and dreams of a better life in the 19th and 20th centuries. In Ronald Takaki's book, “Strangers From a Different Shore,” he mainly focuses on Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Indian, Korean, and Southeast Asian immigrants. The mass Asian immigration began due to the desire for cheap labor. Plantation owners needed more workers in Hawaii, while labor demands in the mainland came from industrialization and railroad work. As a result, many Asians came to America for the better life and began looking for jobs.
Two men who grew up in the same neighborhood, but the choices and the accountability they made comes as outcome in their lives diverge in to two opposite directions. The author of the book, Wes, who is one of the key characters in the book, had arduous childhood and overcame most of the obstacles in his life because of his mother’s support. When Moore was three, he witnessed his father’s death. After his father’s passing, his mother become stand guard. “Baltimore was getting more and more dangerous; there had been a rash of break-ins in the houses around them” (Moore36).
The Analysis of the Stranger, John Wilson in The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson Heroes in literary works were once referred to as the "rebel"; however, the rebel has been replaced by the "stranger" in recent literature. In Lois Simmie's The Secret Lives of Sgt. John Wilson, the novel centers on the title character who is alienated, disaffected and an outsider. The author’s depiction of the central character of Wilson as a stranger engages the reader in a different way, by having the reader want to know more about this mysterious and striking figure.
The Theme of Limiting Expectations The quote, “Expectation is the root of all heartache” written by Shakespeare epitomize the stories of “Brother Dear” and “Boys and Girls”. The expectations set by others transform the characters views on their daily lives and future choices; however, they develop through their given limitations by maturing, and making realizations on their own. Yet, the new found freedom of choice creates conflict within families and society.
For the duration of his essay “The Stranger in the Photo is Me”, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and professor Donald M. Murray depicts his train of thought while flipping through an old family photo album. While describing his experience, Murray carries the reader through the story of his childhood, describing snapshots of some of his favorite memories growing up. Throughout the piece, he shifts back and forth between a family oriented, humorous tone and a nostalgic, regretful one and by doing so, he parallels the true experience of looking through a family photo album. Murray expresses a more serious tone while reflecting on a certain photograph of him in uniform from the beginning of World War II and goes on to explain how in his opinion,
The novel displays Steve’s father’s perception regarding his son’s presence in jail. Steve Harmon ends up in jail for suspected murder, leaving his innocence to be questioned by those closest to him. Steve’s father finds it difficult to believe that Steve is innocent. Steve’s father experiences “tears in his eyes” and “struggles with his emotions” just after Steve asks if his father believes that Steve is truly innocent (Myers 111).
" The Clique," by Lisi Harrison is based on the life of 4 very wealthy girls and a girl that comes to live in their neighborhood, Claire. Claire is not as wealthy as all the other girls, Massie, Kristen, Dylan and Alicia. Massie 's parent own a guest home and that is where the new girl Claire moves in with her family. In the book Claire tries so hard to be a part of Massie 's clique, but the girls do not really like her.
Through the perspective of a rural small-town community in 1960’s Australia, Craig Silvey's novel ‘Jasper Jones’ explores culpability and racial divide. The protagonist, Charlie Bucktin, marks innocence’s end when Corrigan’s outcasted scapegoat, Jasper Jones, places him in a dire situation, testing his morality. Consequentially, Charlie uncovers prejudicial parallels built between Jasper and the Lu family, who are targeted due to their ethnicity.
A picture of the teacher as a passionate, dedicated advocate for students is the one that was painted by Gregory Michie in See You When We Get There: Teaching for Change in Urban Schools. Michie presented the teachers in his books as individuals who needed to work tirelessly to overcome obstacles that the students and the teachers confronted. The teachers strove to overcome these obstacles because doing so was what they thought was in the best interests of their students. See You When We Get There tells the story of five Chicago teachers and their students as presented by Michie. He works to illustrate what he believes to be the most honest view of the way these individuals succeed and fail in their daily lives in urban schools.
Human relationships are imperfect. Family members look out for one another and are expected to have each other's back. William Faulkner, an author, who experienced hardships with his family, wrote a story about a family who also went through troubles because of an abusive and destructive father, Abner Snopes. The protagonist, Colonel Sartoris Snopes, son of Abner Snopes, struggles with obeying his father because he knows that his actions were wrong.

These ‘policemen’ were sent to Poland, or the Soviet side of Poland to maintain order. There were thousands of men who were not wanting to enlist into the military to be on the front lines, thus deciding to join the police. The policemen had two ‘decrees’ to keep up with, it was described in the book Ordinary Men written by Christopher Browning, the commissar order; which involved for on-the-spot execution of any communist suspect of being an anti-German.

In fiction, the narrator controls how the audience connects to and perceives the various characters in a story. A good author can manipulate the narration to connect the audience to certain characters and deepen the reader’s understanding of their conflicts. In “Previous Condition” and “Sonny’s Blues,” James Baldwin illustrates themes of loneliness and isolation in the pursuit of finding a space that feels like home. Although this theme is clear in both stories, Baldwin is able to portray it very differently in each story through the relationship he allows the reader to the characters struggling with these feelings. While “Previous Condition” provides a more intimate relationship to the narrator, “Sonny’s Blues” is able to deliver an additional level of understanding by telling the story through Sonny’s brother, therefore disconnecting the reader in a way that forces him or her to share the characters’ feelings of isolation and confusion.
