The “Fukú” is one of the themes most important in The Brief Wondrous life of Oscar Wao, due to the curse that the family of Oscar is suffering. The family suffer in different ways. to each member of the family the curse works in many different ways such as the problem of being loved, and trying to fit in order to be a typical Dominican. As each story, it had its beginning. Each member of the Leon’s family had the same problem. Also, it has to be mixed with trying to fit and being the typical Dominican. In the beginning, the narrator is explaining how Oscar was at seven years old. He was defined as a Casanova, which means that he was a womanizer. He was “one of those preschool lover boys who was always trying to kiss the girls” (Diaz 11). In this book it is shown that the people in The Dominican Republic, especially the men, are raised as the “typical” Dominican who must always have a girl. At that age, Oscar was handsome. He had a girlfriend but instead of one, he had two girlfriends at the same time. One of those girls was Maritza and the other one was Olga. When he was dating them both, he felt like all was going perfect until Maritza gave him an ultimatum. She told him that it was her or Olga, because she was tired of that situation and she did not want to share him. She made it clear that they are not going to be together so he cried, and did not decide with whom he really wanted to be. He had to compare both and see who was better so he found that “Maritza was beautiful and Olga not; Olga sometimes smelled like pee and Maritza did not. Maritza was allowed over their house and Olga was not” (Diaz 15). “He no longer went anywhere near the girls because at best they ignored him,” and some people call him “gordo asqueroso” which means “ugly fat” (Diaz 17). In that moment, Oscar stopped caring about himself as a typical Dominican, because nobody wanted to date him. He stopped being that “typical” Dominican that everyone on his family used to known. He turned in an insecure person because he stops to be a “Casanova” and has each girl as he wants. He does not care about what his family expects of him, but he is still cares about others opinion of him. He started to read comic books. He becomes in a nerd person so Oscar was “a social introvert who trembled ear during gym class and watched nerd British shows like Doctor Who and Blake’s 7” (Diaz 22). In that moment, it observed the new Oscar turned into a nerd person who does not care more about his appearance but only when he was in public. “He cried in the bathroom where nobody could hear him” (Diaz 24). It happened because he did not get a girl who loves him as when he was seven. Also his uncle Rodolfo in order to push him to come back to be on the Casanova that he used to be he said “started with a fea,” but Oscar just listened to
