15 November, 2017 Chadwicks “The First American Army; The Untold Story of George Washington and the Men Behind America’s First Fight for Freedom” is a very well-crafted story. The novel is a narrative of the Continental Army through the entries of journals and memoirs. In the novel clarity is brought to a dimension of the Revolutionary War, which was crucial but neglected. Chadwick does a great job of capturing the hardships that the enlisted men experienced on a regular basis during the time period of the Revolutionary War. Chadwick’s analysis of the First American Army goes behind the scenes of the particular difficulties in the ordinary lives of the enlisted men under the command of George Washington, and the themes that united them. One of the main themes that linked the enlisted men together was religion. All soldiers in all wars believe that God is on their side, and the enlisted men in the United States military felt that way, too (Chadwick, 51). Another theme that linked the men together was the idea of liberty. They fought for the independence of their nation and with it the salvation of their souls (Chadwick, 52). It did not matter how different the soldiers were, they were fighting for the same cause. The enlisted men came to find similarities that linked them together. These similarities made the army stronger and made them want to fight till the end. Chadwick’s analysis of the First American Army reveals many things about the lives of the men and women who served under the command of George Washington. Washington cared for the men that were at his command. On certain occasions he would give his people passes to return to their homes. Washington was also strict when it came to his men.
