The two similar themed texts “The Book Thief” and “Lion” have transcended time as evidenced through their shared themes and resonance with modern audiences. Markus Zusak’s famous novel “The Book Thief” was published in 2005. The novel’s tremendous popularity saw it adapted and produced into a blockbuster Hollywood film. The story was set in Germany during World War 2, and featured an adopted girl’s entire life touching on the themes of: displacement, family and home, and courage. A modern production with similar thematic elements is the 2016 film “Lion” based on a true story, directed by Garth Davis.

Family and home transcends time as gaining trusts and being a real family is always a heart-warming fact which never change. The concept of family and home is developed naturally within the book thief as Liesel and her new family overcome a series of challenges throughout the novel. The relationships developed between characters emphasises that family is not necessarily biological, it is about trust and love. Hans shows this when Liesel suffers nightmares, Hans every night goes to her bed and kills her aloneness. Hans says “A few nights after that, he whispered, “Shhh, I’m here, it’s all right.” After three weeks, he held her. Trust was accumulated quickly, due primarily to the brute strength of the man’s gentleness, his thereness. (p37, 14)”.

The transcend time theme “family and home” is also represented in the other text “Lion”, which can be seen their happiness when Saroo’s foster parents first see Saroo, and they say “She is Mommy and Dad. And we are so happy to meet you” (46:24). This can also be seen throughout the movie when the family is in apart and his foster mother tells him the truth in her tears. His mother tells him that “You don’t talk to me anymore.” “I need you, Saroo”
