The Killer at Thurston High Summary: In September 1998, Kip Kinkel admitted to killing his guardians in their home on May 20, 1998 and the following day, strolling into the Thurston High School cafeteria and splashing understudies with 50 rounds from a self-loading rifle, killing two understudies, Ben Walker, 16, and Mikael Nickolauson, 17, and injuring 25 others. Kip was accused of four checks of bothered homicide and 26 tallies of exasperated endeavoured murder (for the 25 understudies he injured, in addition to his later ambush on a police investigator.) In November 1999, he was sentenced to over 111 years in jail, without a shot of parole.
Imagine the sight of an open blue sky, trees growing, and warm dry grass moving briskly by the air. And, in front of this scene, there is a wonderful endless pit, stained by blood and some partial limbs. The whole world has just decided to jump off a cliff, because why not escape the dark gripping fears that life holds? Society has darred and pushed each other off to this dark encasing hole. Sure it will hurt, but only for a little bit, right?
George Santayana once said, “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” Without knowing the mistakes of the past, how can we avoid them in the future? Society needs to be held accountable for its faults so that we do not fall into the same traps of racism and prejudice. When students feel uncomfortable while reading the novel they will realise, with guidance, why what was being done was so wrong. William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies is about a group of young boys, aged around 6-12, that crash land on an uninhabited island, and without adults, they fail miserably. In E.L Epstein’s article “NOTES ON LORD OF THE FLIES” Golding reveals in his novel that the flaws in human nature lead to a flawed society; which is seen in society (Epstein par. 3). Lord of the Flies provides an example of how imperfections in human nature start to surface when people are in a groups. One imperfection is their tendency to do violent and demeaning things as a mob.
Shatoni Madison February 3.2016 Writing Wednesday Recently, several English teachers have decided to teach a certain book to their classes that contains questionable material normally not allowed in schools, including poor language, sexuality, and violence. They claim that the book has many redeeming qualities about it, and also is a great tool for teaching students reading and analytical skills. In my opinion, teachers should be permitted to teach these questionable book to their students. If an author's work was to be tampered with I feel as if many books will lose their value and or the meaning the author was trying to convey.
Literature, old or modern, has always been subject to criticism and judgement due to the issues that exist within classic novels. Whether the issue contains profanity, violence, or content too mature for young readers, award-winning books’ existences receive threats to be banned and forgotten. Unfortunately for Ken Kesey’s classic, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, this may be the only course of action. While the novel displays violence unsuitable for high-school curriculums, Ken Kesey’s classic should be in every library for adult readers. It’s necessary to talk to our students about slavery’s roots in the United States and how recent African-Americans only got their equal rights and treatment with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Act of 1965. John Schwetman, an assistant professor teaching American literature at the University of Minnesota Duluth, explained about a “conversation about literature… acknowledging changing reading tastes, changing values, changing concerns of readers.” (Louwagie) Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, wrote of her experience with racism in mind.
