The holocaust took place in Europe because Hitler wanted to cleanse the world of Jews. Hitler did not only get rid of the Jews but he also got rid of many others such as the disabled, LGBT community, Gypsies, and the Polish. Through a variety of texts, people can learn about the holocaust like in the book Night which is an autobiography by Elie Wiesel, a holocaust survivor. Also a video documentary called Auschwitz death camp and a poem called "To the little polish boy" are texts that were written after the holocaust.
The book Night by Elie Wiesel is an incredibly written memoir about his struggle through the Holocaust. I have chosen to look at the motifs in this memoir. A motif is symbol or image that is constantly referred to in the text. In this paper we will focus on the motif of night and it’s significance to the story telling.

Night, by Elie Wiesel talks about his struggles as a young Jewish boy in Hungary growing up during World War Two. Before the war, Elie was very reliant on his Hebrew studies, such as reading the Talmud and the cabbala. His teacher's name was Moishe the Beadle, Moishe was a very active and exceptional man. The Hungarian government sent out a decree stating that all foreign Jews were to be sent away. Moishe the Beadle was a foreign Jew, so he is sent away.

Weisel recalls many points in time where he remained hopeful even when it seemed impossible. He and millions of other Jewish prisoners were at the hands of the merciless Nazi’s, Weisel recalls many events where he could have given up but would not allow himself to.
The horrid events in chapters six and seven demonstrated many of the major themes in the story while simultaneously evoking emotional reactions from the readers. These two chapters are centered around the journey of the Nazi prisoners from Buna to Buchenwald. One of the major events that occurred during the first leg of the journey was a 20 kilometer run towards their destination. Death ran rampant during this run. Elie witnessed the last moments of a young boy named Zalman.

No one knows where they are going and many are excited, except for Moishe. Moishe has learned of the horrors of the Nazis and what they are doing to the Jews. They are killing them in horrible ways, but no one wants to believe Moishe. This really lowers Moishe’s spirits because he knows that what happened to many other Jews will soon happen to all of his friends after they are relocated. Groups of Jews are moved out day by day and Eliezer is in the very last group.
