Sinclair’s novel The Jungle has many themes in the book. It starts off as a family moving to America for a better life. Many things happened in the book for explain all the dishonest men, the significance of the title, society, Jurgis encounters, the significance of the quote, “I aimed for the public heart, and...hit it in the stomach.” The United States wasn't what they expected but life is like an elevator,on your way up you sometimes have to stop and let somebody off. Jurgis did that he had to let go of the people that he cared about the most to get to the top. In the Sinclair novel he had pointed out how many working men engage in dishonest practices. He was an honest many just trying to get life when he meet some of these people they either helped him out or helped ruin his life. Ona’s dad he didn't want them together but after his death they ended up getting married one person who didn't want things thing right for Jurgis, Connor A man who raped his wife and sen him to jail and made sure that he didn't get a job in Packingtown another man who made life hard for Jurgis. The boss of the factory that Jurgis was working at when he got hurt he fired him because he wanted strong men that were healthy at the time as another person who made his life hard because no jib no money. If all those things didn't happen to Jurgis he wouldn't have been in the situation he was mayne his wife and son would have been still alive. The significance of the quote “I aimed for the public's heart, and… hit it in the stomach.” The point Sinclair tried to get across didn't work instead everyone looked at how bad the meat was in the 1900s. The meaning hit it in the stomach refers how everyone was grossed out how the meat really bad meat they felt gross because that was what they were eating. Sinclair wanted everyone to feel bad for the poor that's why he wanted things equal for everyone that's what he wanted his main focus to be but instead they focused on the meat
