The short story “Weddings and beheadings” is written by Hanif Kureshi in 2006. The themes of his work both in general and in this short story illuminate topics which society perceives as tabooed. This story deals with a person forced to record beheadings of people and the consequences associated. The story takes place in an unknown setting. But the actions taking place in this story points out that the setting is somewhere in the Middle East. The cynicism, frequency and brutality behind these beheadings reminds of the global issues of terrorism which is ravaging in the Middle East today. In addition to this, another evidence of this particular setting is the gear they are using to make the beheadings and that can be seen from the following quotation.” The cameras are good quality; they’re taken from foreign journalists”. This quotation emphasizes that the cameras are taken from foreign journalists. If that quotation is compared to the situation in the Middle East today the probability of these journalists being former victims are extremely high, since terrorist has reached a high amount of notoriety for beheadings of journalists in the Middle East. These themes are presented in the way the narrator is describing the circumstances. An example of that can be seen from the following quotation,” We were ‘recommended’ for this employment, and we can’t not do it; we can’t say we’re visiting relatives or working in the cutting room”. This quotation presents fear, corruption and power. The narrator shows fear off disobedience properly because of unbearable consequences.
