A book filled with magic, entertainment and action. Here is why the novel “Akata Witch” by Nnedi Okorafor should be taught to future grade nine classes. It has great themes, the conflicts are thrilling and the character development is realistic.

This novel has various themes, so students can learn how to identify and name different themes. One of my favorites is Survival. It includes the characters working together to defeat a bigger and more powerful force and it drives the plot.

A serial killer had been mentioned since the beginning of the novel. A psychopath who kills children for rituals was on the loose, and his kills had been getting closer and closer to Sunny, Chichi, and Orlu and Sasha’s home throughout the chapters. The Group versus creatures in the Night Runner Forest. Chichi, Orlu, Sasha and Sunny had to face some deadly forces in order to pass through the Night Runner Forest. They had to fight bats that were possessed by bush souls; they bit and scratched, and the four of them were fighting for their lives.
“The bats were a diversion,” Chichi said weakly. “What?” Sunny asked, starting to cry. “What was it?” “A bush soul,” Chichi said. “Spirits, affinities, that live in forests like this. They attack people, steal their bodies. They always have the respect of animals that swarm, move in packs… like bats. Bush souls hide in them and use them to distract.” (127)

The Group versus Masquerade. It had a four-faced head and it attacked the group with thousands of insects. People got hurt, and a lot of them ran for their lives. The one thing I can say without giving away too much is that one of the four main characters saved the day.
“Students called for Allah, Legba, Chukwu, Jesus, Mawu, God, Chineke, Oya, Ani, Asaase Yaa, Allat, and many other deities to protect them.”
