The theme of the novel Fledgling by Octavia Butler is “don’t give up, keep going” with the main characters trying to make things right, even if they don’t know what to and that their friends will always have their back and the same goes for the book The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. Because both of their themes forces on persevering; getting through tough times and always have your friends there to support you - but they write in completely different ways. -

An example from Butler is I stopped and looked at myself. My skin was scarred, badly scarred over every part of my body that I could see. The scars were broad, creased, shiny patches of mottled red-brown skin. Had I always been scarred? Was my face scarred? ( Butler, 16 ). And an example for Cassandra Clare is It lurched forward into the shallow water at the edge of the river. This helps with the development of the story by letting us - the readers - know when something is going to happen when the characters are talking to each other this is where we can see some of the tones coming out. But with The Mortal Instruments there are so many different tones throughout the book like exited, envious, forthright, some of the characters are fearful and others are egotistical.
