Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world (Harriet Tubman). Throughout the novella, Of Mice and Men, the author John Steinbeck displays that having a dream may impact one to make better choices. Steinbeck shows this through the motif of dreams, characterization, and imagery.
After reading this book, I found myself shocked, and almost in a daze. From beginning to near end, this book talked about George, Lennie, and then Candy saving up their money and buying a huge plot of land. However, all of their future plans were destroyed from the moment Curley’s wife let Lennie stroke her hair. It was in that moment that I could first foresee the horror of the events to come, and why this story is called, by some, tragic.
Lennie struggles throughout Of Mice and Men, battling himself mentally to fit in with society. An example of his mental confusion is when he killed the puppy. “Now I won’t get to tend the rabbits. Now he won’t let me.” Lennie knows that
In the novel Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck comments on three thematic ideas: Friendship, Loneliness/Isolation and the American Dream. Based on the first 3 chapters of the novel, analyze what Steinbeck is saying about each of the ideas. You need to write a claim with one reason, find a piece of evidence to show your argument and analyze your evidence. Thematic idea: Friendship Claim: In the book, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck is portraying the theme of Friendship through the relationship between George and Lennie.
Perceptions and Perspectives People have different perceptions which help them to see the world differently. There are also perspectives which are mostly influenced by perceptions. Some perspectives can help people to solve problems and be sensible. But some of them are creating prejudgements. The problem about prejudgements is, as Anaïs Nin tells, “We don’t see thing as they are; we see them as we are.”
Lennie is painted as a person unliked by several because of his mental disability but is the hardest working and most capeable person on the ranch no matter what people think about him, do to him, or how they treat him. There are several points throughout the novel that Lennie is treated horribly and still out works everyone around him without thinking about it to the point nobody is able to keep up with him and dosen’t want to work with him. John Steinbeck truly shows how during the great depression people no matter their medical conditions or problems were only wanted to work and were never given much needed health care that could have improved their
“If you can dream it, you can do it,” Walt Disney. In Of Mice of Men, written by John Steinbeck, characters: Curley's Wife, Crooks, George and Lennie believed in this quote. They all had dreams and hoped for them to seize accomplishment(to get accomplished). That’s when reality took them by surprise, which made their dreams vanish into thin air. An important theme conveyed in this book is that it showed how people have dreams but get confined by reality causing their dreams to not happen.
Nature is widely regarded as something beautiful—and yet authors John Steinbeck and Robert Burns portray it to be cruel and senseless. Burns’ poem “To a Mouse” clearly reflects naturalistic themes in Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. Both writings promote a strong sense of nature and society being indifferent to individuals’ struggles and lives. Society is insensitive to special needs because all the ranch workers (the ‘society’ in this case) pay no heed to Lennie’s state of mind. Everyone, including George, calls him dumb or ‘cuckoo’ for being the way he is.
It was well known by a few that Lennie would never do anything to hurt a single soul. Lennie tried his best to stay out of trouble and for the most part, it worked. In Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie often talk about their plan to buy a little house and let all their worries drift away from them, but in the end it doesn’t work out that way. Their dream floats away due to an incident that caused Lennie to be killed. John Steinbeck was smart in his way of quick thinking and connected Of Mice and Men to the poem written by Robert Burns.
In the novella Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck, there are many themes including the American dream, isolation, prejudice, and man and the natural world. The story focuses on the journey of George and Lennie while they try and work enough to be able to afford their dream of getting a house and land to live on. They have to overcome many obstacles and they meet many people on their way. They eventually meet their tragic fate and have their dreams cut short. The theme of the American dream is developed throughout the novella and is shown by the following examples.
Before the novel begins, Lennie and George were fired from their old job because Lennie was touching a girl’s dress the same way he would pet a mouse. As the story progresses, the bus driver dropped them off four miles away from the ranch where their new job is located. While walking towards the ranch they find a spot to spend the night. This spot is in the middle of the woods where there is a river, wildlife, and trees everywhere. Compared to all the ranches and fields this feels like an ideal place to stay the night.
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck takes place near Soledad, California, 1937, during the Great Depression on a ranch. The novel is about two men who share a dream of raising enough money to own a plot of land named Lennie, a mentally challenged giant who was wrongly accused of rape at their old job, and George, a small man who looks after him. This parable has many themes, but the main one would be what it means to be human. What it means to be human has several underlying themes, like the nature of dreams, the nature of loneliness, man's tendency for cruelty, powerlessness and economic injustices, and the uncertainty of the future. It starts off with the duo walking to their new job at a ranch.
The book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck took place in California during the Great Depression. The Great Depression started because the stock markets crashed all around the world. The United States didn’t recover until 12 years later, the end 1939. Most people had poor living conditions and women didn’t have many rights during that time period. Many of the children had to leave school to help support their families on the farm doing farm work.
The story starts a few miles south from Soledad near some rocky Gabilan Mountains. George is quick and small, and he is a leader and he is smart. Lennie is tall and skinny, but lennie is not that smart, and he acts like animals, and he also acts like a kid. George and Lennie was working at a ranch that wasn’t so pleasant, you could see rabbits dogs and tracks of the dogs, you could see the deer and could also see the split-wedge tracks of the deer. You could see the branches and limbs of the trees.
Because of Lennie’s mental state, he does things that he can’t control. He kills mice, a puppy, and even a woman. In the 1930’s, when this story takes place, they didn’t have mental hospitals, and if they did, they wouldn’t be for a lower-class worker like Lennie. No one cared about them. Lennie was too strong and he didn’t know how to control what he did enough to not kill those animals.
