The novel, The American Way of Poverty: How the Other Half Still Lives by Sasha Abramsky is about how he traveled the United States meeting the poor. The stories he introduces in novel are articles among data-driven studies and critical investigations of government programs. Abramsky has composed an impressive book that both defines and advocates. He reaches across a varied range of concerns, involving education, housing and criminal justice, in a wide-ranging view of poverty 's sections. In considering results, it 's essential to understand how the different problems of poor families intermingle in mutual reinforcement.
Critical Review The Working Poor: Invisible in America David K. Shipler is a book that could be most accurately described as eye-opening. Shipler opens up the book on his claim that “nobody who works hard should be poor in America.” America is built upon the idea that the harder one works, the better off one will be. Shipler then goes on to explain how the poor, often times, work the hardest jobs and are put into the worse conditions, but still do not grow to become the most successful. Using their lives as examples, Shipler illustrates the struggles the working poor face while attempting to escape poverty.
Poverty is a crippling situation which can stagnate the development of individuals. Insufficiency in a society can affect persons in more ways than one. Those experiencing a substandard way of living may not be able to obtain quality education which can cause a lack of sufficient employment. Lower paying jobs will more than likely not include quality health insurance for the employee.
For example Juan Luis Vives a Spanish Humanist had stated in a piece of writing entitled On Assistance to the Poor in Bruges, Spanish Netherlands in 1526, that the poor have no sense of direction in their lives anymore. (Doc 1) “We do not know by what law the poor live, nor what practices or beliefs are.” (Doc 1) Vives clearly paints a picture in our head of people walking around with no expression expecting pity which gives the impression of them only waiting for someone to make their lives better. With this classification of poverty we can clearly state that those who have lived the life where they have nowhere to leave they turn against everything not just God.
The common people of colonial America created the majority of the Continental Army and other aggressor branches. The poor were inspired by the hope to rise in rank and acquire substantial income which led them to flock the enlist. It was colonial laymen who suffered through unbearable cold, sickness, and malnutrition in addition to attending in a vicious battle and witnessing amass of slaughtered dead bodies. Occurring simultaneously were conflicts between the poor who were not at war and those who continued to prosper and had a lot of wealth. One would expect that because the poor were drilled to the impact of the Revolution social changes would tend toward the democratic virtues.
If you were in poverty in the south it was very hard to get out of. Along with that they had no factories which contributed to people not being able to get out of poverty. Plain and simple, poverty is serious and we must get to the root of it.

Another personal issue that can lead to poverty is illness and unemployment which puts someone out of work and there is little to no income coming in. Certain social trends have impacted the society such as Family Dynamics; The way families are now are a lot different than families of the 1950’s-1960’s, In many cases both adult members of the family are working instead of the traditional husband working to support the family. Even with both members working full time it is still hard to support an average family due to working class wages not adjusting to inflation. Poverty has been increasing at a dramatic rate and the government is supporting more and more people with perverse incentives.

Poor people are unable to fulfill basic survival needs such as food, clothing, shelter. These are the needs of lowest order and assume top priority. Poor people are unknown of their lack of voice, power, and rights, which leads them to exploitation.

While the majority of people would relate the word poverty with less developed countries the truth is that poverty is to be found everywhere you look. Yet the term, poverty, is brought up to discussion. Because would you consider yourself poor even though you didn’t know the better scenario existed? And isn’t it sometimes enough just to have a bed to sleep in, food to eat and people around who love you?
