Of all the presidents to lead the United States, Theodore Roosevelt was one of the most important and influential ones in history. He emphasized development and peace for the country. Development for the country came through national services and safety acts President Theodore Roosevelt put into place. He also brought peace for America as he was a good negotiator during times of protest and war. There is some opposition that Theodore Roosevelt was not one of the most important and influential presidents, saying that some of his actions throughout his presidency did not help the country. For one, he helped Panama gain its independence from Columbia in 1903. Also, Roosevelt helped mediate the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 (History). This may have helped the United States to become known as a country with good merits. In addition, he had previous war experience. He fought defending America in the Spanish-American War before his presidency (History). His experience in the war he fought likely helped him negotiate the end of the Russo-Japanese War during his presidency. During a coal strike, Theodore traveled to Pennsylvania where he mediated a peaceful end to the protest (Britannica). Opponents believe that when Roosevelt changed tribal land into government protected land, that Native Americans lost land that they used for special purposes (TopTenz). Changing of land from tribal to government may have been intended to protect it from industries wanting to use the tribal lands to expand their businesses. Another thing opposers believe is that when Roosevelt tried to run for three terms, he was showing disrespect to George Washington. They believe this because George Washington was the only president to previously have been president for three terms (TopTenz). Nevertheless, there was no written law that said a person could not serve for three terms as president at that time in history. Finally, people believe he was not an important and influential president because of his character. When he was giving a speech, someone attempted to assassinate him, yet he continued speaking (TopTenz). A few people believe that this shows that Theodore Roosevelt was self-absorbed, but this was not the case (TopTenz).
