In 1901 the most amazing thing that ever happened to America took place. On October 27, 1858 Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated. Unfortunately, this did not occur on the best of terms. He was vice president to William McKinley. He was fatally shot a month before. Accepting the responsibility which comes with the task he accepted when becoming vice president, he stepped up and fulfilled the duties of the president. He did an outstanding job of presiding over our country. Some in that time considered him to be the president we needed rather than the president we wanted. This garnered the support of many other progressives in congress. This overwhelming support of those off the same beliefs as himself helped his legislations get pushed through. One of these being the hepburn act. This finally but a limit on how much railroads can charge for use of their track. He used the presidency as a bully pulpit. He saw the presidency as a platform to do whatever he saw need to be done. He accomplished many presidential firsts. He was the first to refer to the presidential mansion as the white house. He also brought many races in the white house. Roosevelt invited a black man over to the white house for a dinner and also put a jewish person in his cabinet. He created the FDA ( federal food and drug administration) after he had read a piece of literature entitled “the jungle”. This book details the life of immigrants and the main focus wasn't even the meat packing industry. The intent was that it triggers compassion in the people. My president saw this book and decided to do something about it. This leads to the meat inspection act and the food and drug act being enacted. The main focus of this were called the “Three C’s”. They are conserving nature, getting rid of control corporations, and consumer protection. He established 5 national parks and 18 national monuments. He preserved 200 million acres of our forest. In 1906, the national monuments act was passed. Another part of the Square Deal is the panama canal. Roosevelt commissioned it to make trade and travel easier. Because of this being built, many people were employed and could afford more things. Another thing that was made is the Grand Canyon. These things gave everyone a fair chance, even the environment. He had many things happen in foreign affairs. Roosevelt negotiated the end of the Russo-Japanese War. After the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 there was a call to put japaneses children in a special to help deal with not having enough space. He established the “Gentlemen’s Agreement” in response to this. This stated that the japanese government would stop issuing visas to the usa and the us would not discriminate against the japanese
