In the article, “There is no true History of the Westward Expansion,” Robert, Morgan justifies that average citizens were responsible for the western expansion. Morgan elaborates on the idea that their was “Heroes and Villains,” when it came to the exploration west. Morgan’s central idea is erroneous because the Indians weren’t trying to cause harm to the white men, when the Indians just wanted to pursue unity with the white men. Morgan claims that the average citizens were responsible for the exploration west is also erroneous because Jefferson was one of the main people that had contribution to the exploration west. In Undaunted Courage, Stephen Ambrose explains that Jefferson was important to the expansion west. “He sought greatness for himself and for his nation,” this enunciates that Jefferson would do anything thing to help his nation. In “Reporting to the President, September 23-December 31,1806,” Stephen Ambrose says “On that point, Lewis had carried out Jefferson’s orders exactly,” this shows that Jefferson pick the right person for the job to explore the west. In Chief Joseph Speaks…, Joseph states, “When the white men were few and we were strong we could have killed them off, but the Nez Perce wishes to live at peace.” This shows that the Indians just wanted to have freedom and unity with the white men, even though the Indians had an opportunity to execute the white men they were determined not to . Even when the white men tried to take the Indians land; the Indians tried to give them land to keep peace with the white men. After all the things the white men done including stealing the Indians gold, trying to take the Indians land, treating the Indians unequal, and being offered peace and not living up to it; the Indians still wanted to have peace with the white
