In “There Will Come Soft Rains” Ray Bradbury uses futuristic technology in the setting to show that nature can overcome even the most sophisticated technological devices that war cannot destroy which creates the theme of the story. Technology in the present day astounds people because of how great it is, but the power of Nature’s elements is even greater. At the start of the story Ray Bradbury portrays the house to be very technological with cleaning mice, it cooks, reads poems, and even attempts to save itself, “The house tried to save itself.” Towards the middle of the story Bradbury says that the house gives off a radioactive glow which means it had survived nuclear war. In the present day technology is thought of to be very powerful. By using these great technological devices Bradbury shows that not even war can destroy the greatest invention the world has ever produced. At the end of the story Bradbury has the house destroyed by a fire that was caused by a branch hitting the stove. Instead of having the house destroyed some other way he purposely uses nature and nature’s elements. This part of the story is crucial to the theme and how it is portrayed. Also the house reads a poem of it’s choice that has to deal with nature and how easily nature can forget the war. Bradbury uses that poem to foreshadow the effect nature will have on the house at the end of the story. It also reminds the reader that the house survived the war and easily forgot about
