Ray Bradbury wrote science fiction/fantasy novels and short stories that have similarities in lots of aspects. His stories have a general tone of grim dark or hopelessness. Bradbury grew up in a time of war which could have influenced his writing. He tends to write about what he thinks will happen in the future. Bradbury said that he does not write science fiction because that depicts reality. He said that his stories are fantasy because they do not depict reality. His works are closer to science fiction than to fantasy. The stories that he wrote were “There Will Come Soft Rains”, “Dark They Were and Golden-Eyed” , “All Summer in a Day”, and Fahrenheit 451.

They are both set in the future. They also show the worst parts of the planets. On Venus it rains for 7 years straight and then it stops raining for 2 hours every 7 years because of this the children have to spend all of their time indoors and that is not good for their morale. On Mars, the food that they planted changed and then they started to turn into Martians. It is also hot on mars and that makes it an undesirable place to live. The physical features of Venus consist of the jungle and the subterranean tunnel networks that connect all of the places where the people live and work and learn. “They stopped running and stood in the great jungle that covered Venus” this quote shows that there is a jungle on venus and that it takes place on another planet venus. The landscape of Mars is described more in-depth. There is a town that has a bunch of cottages that the people from earth live in. It also has a river and a lot of mountains. “The man felt his hair flutter and the tissues of his body draw tight as if he were standing at the center of a vacuum.” This quote is used to give the reader a more detailed description of what Harry Bittering feels when he steps off of the rocket. Another example of this is shown in this quote. “The wind blew, whining. At any moment the martian air might draw his soul from him, as marrow comes from white bone." This is comparing the martin air potentially sucking the soul out of him to the marrow that is in white bones. “I feel like a salt crystal,’ he often said, ‘in a mountain stream being washed away. We don't belong here.” This quote is like comparing him and the people who came to mars to live there to salt crystals in a mountain stream. He is trying to tell us that she does not like it there and like a mountain stream he feels like Mars is going to try to push it out and get rid of it.
