There Will Come Soft Rains Paragraph In Ray Bradbury’s story “There Will Come Soft Rains”, the post-apocalyptic setting and automated house demonstrate the dangers of technological advances in society. Established by the setting, the house “[stands] alone in a city of rubble and ashes (1).” This provided support shows that the house is among nothing to survive in a bomb explosion. Humankind dies out due to the powerful nuclear bomb, but technology stands strong, represented by the house. In this house, ran by technology, human actions in the household are now replaced by robots and machinery. If a bird even “[brushes] a window, the shade [snaps] up (1).” This aspect of the house is only a small factor to the big picture of technology vs. nature. As the story progresses, the reader finds out that even though the war that results in the EXTINCTION of mankind has ended, the war between nature and technology has just started. A fire starts with a falling tree crashing through the kitchen window, cleaning solvent shattering over the stove and in a flash the room is ablaze. In total chaos the house scrambles to try and save itself in more ways than one. “Scurrying water rats [squeak] from the walls and [pistol] their water” while “doors [spring] tightly shut” in attempts to put out the growing fire (3). In the end, the house does not survive the disaster and crumbles underneath its strength. As told in the poem by Sara Teasdale, “not one [will] mind, neither bird nor tree, If mankind [perishes] utterly; and spring herself, when she woke at dawn [will] scarcely know that we [are] gone (3).” This is seen throughout the story, as the house continues to operate without the help of the family that occupies it.
