This story describes an abandoned electronic house that still believes the family resides inside. Little does the house know, the family does not even exist anymore. In “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Ray Bradbury, he uses literary devices to help the reader understand the deeper meaning of the story and picture it better. Without the figurative language, the reader may be left on the edge of their seat and they would be pretty confused about what was happening throughout the story. Ray Bradbury successfully uses personification and imagery to help build tension in the story and give a better view of how the story takes place and may end.

Short Story Thesis/Outline of There Will Come Soft Rain The short story There Will Come Soft Rain is set in the future, where the author illustrates the only smart house left after a nuclear explosion. Bradbury uses vivid imagery, figurative language, and allusion to show that technology is not affected by the annihilation of human existence. Bradbury paints a vivid picture of this automated house doing daily tasks for humans but no one is there. For example, the author describes the silhouette of a family that used to live in a house burnt into the woods.
The poem “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Sara Teasedale and the short-story “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Ray Bradbury may have the same title/name, but are both very different in their own unique ways. This is how they are different AND alike. First, I will be talking about the poem written by Sara Teasedale. Now this poem written by Teasedale was written in the year “1920” was written to warn people about the Great War or more commonly know as World War One.
Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” tells of an empty, quiet town with houses that automatically perform its scheduled daily chores. Bradbury uses great detail, repetition, allusion and similes to explain the automatic abilities of the home. In the beginning, Bradbury starts with the house rising for the morning. It speaks through the walls and ceiling the time, date and place. He says “Today is August 4, 2026," said a second voice from the kitchen ceiling.
Ray Bradbury's stories are always stories with a deeper meaning. The common theme throughout his stories are how he despises technology. He doesn't believe in the usage of technology and that technology is a dangerous thing. From Ray Bradbury is on Fire, "He is scornful of the Internet (telling one reporter it's 'a big scam' by computer companies) and ATMs (asking,"why go to a machine when you can go to a human being?")" (299) Ray Bradbury doesn't understand the need for new and unuseful technology when there are perfectly good hard working humans to do the extra work. Bradbury lets his readers identify with the human qualities presented in what Man has made to encourage empathy toward his ‘main character’. However, he also presents the impossibility of replicating certain aspects of human life with the cold and calculated ways already established at a machine’s core.

To start with, the narrative is set in the future on August 4th, 2026. The story took place inside an abandoned mechanical house beside surrounded by ruins. Throughout the story, there was an anonymous voice repeating the time and indicating reminders to complete jobs.

While these two pieces of literature resemble each other in many ways, they also differentiate in just as many.

Situational Irony adds drama to the story and engages the reader. There are three specific examples of situational irony in There Will Come Soft Rains: The house continues to perform its daily tasks even though no one lives there, the house is destroyed by a tree branch that starts a fire yet it survived a nuclear fallout, and Mrs. McClellan’s favorite poem describes the situation in the story. The first example of situational irony can be seen in the fact that the house continues to do its everyday tasks even though all of the humans that used to live there are dead.

Nothing could be heard in the desolate town except for the steady and distinct droning of a single house. In the enlightening short story, “There Will Come Soft Rains,” Ray Bradbury used personification to give embodiment and essence to all of the inanimate objects inside the abandoned house. For the period of the short story, the single, lonely house in the city of Allendale, California, continued its busy, endless routine. Not knowing about the nuclear bomb that destroyed the entire city of Allendale in the year 2026. While the house was still running smoothly, “In the kitchen, the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh,” (Bradbury 215).
Ray Bradbury’s “There Will Come Soft Rains,” tells the story of a self-regulating house that is all that is left of the world. Through the use of diction, the reader is able to understand the shifts in tone throughout the story. In the beginning of the story, we are introduced to the house. Bradbury uses terms such as “ruined city,” “radioactive glow,” and “rubble and ashes,” (Bradbury 1) effectively creating a dark and forlorn atmosphere. The author’s word choice creates an image in the reader’s mind of how desolate the house’s surroundings are, ultimately contributing to the somber tone.
