In addition to the chemical environmental factors, obesity can be caused by the change in thermodynamics. Thermodynamics model is defined by the National Institutes of
Health as, “the energy balance equation between energy intake and energy expenditure that is applicable to all living organisms.” According to the thermodynamics model, there should be a balance between what the person consume of energy (calories), and how much calories the person burns. The change in the dynamics of nature from the past until today affected many species’ lives which resulted in making these species gain more weight. In this article, Berreby discusses other factors that can lead to obesity other than the amount of food that people eat and the level of their physical activity. The author states that focusing only on the personal behavior is waste of time and money on the researches done on obesity, and he argues that obesity is caused by more complex factors. Berreby writes, “the purely thermodynamic model must appeal to complicated indirect effects. The story might go like this: being poor is stressful, and stress makes you eat, and the cheapest food available is the stuff with a lot of 'empty calories', therefore poorer people are fatter than the better-off.” In this quote, the author explains how thermodynamic model must include everything that changed and has effect on the person’s life not only the balance between food intake and food consumption.
He mentions an example about how being poor may cause stress which makes the poor person eats more due to the stress. As a result, the person will head to the cheapest food which is worst calorie provider food.
