Being Your Better Self Becoming better benefits a bunch of beings. When you become better, you may not know it, but people around you benefit from you trying to improve. This happens to the main protagonist, Santiago because he strives to become better and everyone and everything’s lives around him improve as well. In the novel, The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, Santiago learns, “When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too.” To begin, King Melchizedek tries to become better, and in return Santiago becomes better.

Turning Santiago into the wind saved his life, he was being held captive and when he turned into the wind he was able to escape from the people holding him captive.

Conflicts occur frequently in literature and life, but are they necessary? In my opinion, we do need to have conflicts so we could learn from them. We will analyze the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell and how the author uses external conflict or man vs. nature, external by man vs. animal and external conflicts or man vs. man to reveal character motivation or development. This short story is about a guy (Rainsford) who falls off a ship and swims to an island and finds out that Zaroff hunts people for entertainment. As Richard Connell states on page 7 .

Santiago is just a regular shepherd but, after dreaming of treasure at the pyramids Santiago goes to consult with a woman about his dreams and has no luck, then he meets a man in the plaza who says he’s the King of Salem. After chatting with the man Santiago decides to travel to Africa to pursue his Personal Legend. Santiago works at a mans crystal shop to earn money to travel to the pyramids and after a few successful months he hops aboard a caravan of camels and makes his way to the pyramids.
Some people’s ignorance of dreams can be harmful for themselves just like knife is for butter. Santiago’s dream of a treasure in Egypt, for instance, reveals to him his Personal Legend and sets the entire plot of the Alchemist into motion. For Santiago finding treasure wasn’t easy. He had to sacrifice his shepherdess (as he sold his sheep) and work for year at Crystal Merchant’s shop to gain money to travel because he was robbed. Crystal Merchant did not believe in his dream of going to Mecca.
